PROJECT

The proposed photovoltaic system I am currently designing is an electric producing/water pumping system for a hospital in a village near Lake Victoria named Majita. Majita is roughly a two hour drive west from Musoma.  The isolation and lack of finances of the village prevents the use of any formal electrical grid.  Solar panels would be successful in an application like this because of the high solar index for the region.  The design will provide power for a vaccine refrigerator, 60 high efficiency LED lights, two laptops/notebooks, and the capability to charge 4 cell phones each day. The system will also provide power for purified drinking water.  Inadequate access to potable water is a large contributor to the estimated 1.1 billion people lacking proper drinking water worldwide [1].  Currently, the villagers have to travel an excessive distance on foot to Lake Victoria.  The design will minimize the water collection risks, alleviate the daily concern for potable water, provide filtration from suspended solids and other contaminants, and provide a water management technique by storing water in a basin.
